Southern Five Layer Beef Casserole (Print)

Layers of beef, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and peppers baked to warm Southern perfection.

# Ingredients:

→ Main Layers

01 - 3 large russet potatoes, thinly sliced
02 - 450 g lean ground beef, browned and crumbled
03 - 2 large onions, sliced into rings
04 - 2 large tomatoes, sliced (or 425 g canned diced tomatoes, drained)
05 - 1.5 green bell peppers, chopped

→ Seasoning and Finishing

06 - Kosher salt, to taste
07 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
08 - Olive oil, as needed

# Steps:

01 - Preheat the oven to 175°C.
02 - Lightly grease a 33x23 cm baking pan with butter or nonstick spray.
03 - Arrange a layer of thinly sliced russet potatoes at the bottom of the prepared dish.
04 - Drizzle the potato layer evenly with olive oil.
05 - Spread the browned and crumbled lean ground beef over the potatoes.
06 - Distribute the sliced onion rings in an even layer over the beef.
07 - Place the sliced tomatoes (or evenly spread the canned diced tomatoes) atop the onions.
08 - Scatter the chopped green bell peppers over the tomato layer.
09 - Sprinkle each layer with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper as assembled.
10 - Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 120 minutes.
11 - Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
